Revision of International Application Deadlines for MBA Program

Looking at the international applications trends and demands from various markets across the world, the Faculty of Business finally decided to have an extended deadline for all international applicants.

Master of Arts in Sustainable Leisure Management:

  • Ideal program for hospitality and tourism graduates
  • 8-12 months of fieldwork and thesis research
  • VIU designated as a centre of excellence in this field by World Leisure Organisation
  • Intersection of two growing, exciting, and globally significant areas of theory and practice: leisure and sustainability
  • Examine and create solutions which ensure that residents and travellers alike can enjoy recreational experiences, natural and cultural amenities, heritage resources, and adventure as part of their life experiences on a sustainable basis
  • Engage in coursework delivered in a non–traditional, international educational setting where the instructional approach draws upon field experience, classroom instruction, and experiential styles of learning
  • Acquire a broad interdisciplinary knowledge of concepts, models and issues relating to the field of leisure services
  • Analyse sustainability issues by integrating social, environmental and economic perspectives

Admission Requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree (3 year degrees accepted) from an appropriately accredited university
  • A minimum average of 55% calculated in the last two years of the undergraduate degree, with a review of the entire degree
  • IELTS 6.5 with no band under 6.0
  • Work experience preferred, but not mandatory
  • Resume and three letters of reference (two academic referees and one professional)
  • Comprehensive statement addressing each of the following areas:
    • Areas of research interest (i.e. parks, festivals, resorts, tourism, etc.)
    • Statement of career interest
    • Summary of relevant preparation (i.e. career and academic)

Dual Degree MBA & MScIB:

  • Master of Business Administration + Master of Science in International Business
  • MScIB degree from University of Hertfordshire (UH), located near London, England
  • Only business school in Canada to offer a dual degree program
  • VIU Business School is accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP)
  • 16 Months (general MBA) to 19 Months (specialised MBA) program (including the pre-MBA foundation course)
  • Optional specialisations available between Marketing and Finance for no additional tuition fee

Admission Requirements:

Master of Community Planning (MCP):

  • Ideal program for civil engineers and architects
  • Also good for graduates of geography, GIS, tourism and environmental sciences
  • Program includes fieldwork and thesis research
  • Accredited by Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP)
  • Graduates will be eligible to apply for full membership with the CIP
  • The program focuses on:
    • Small city and town planning
    • Community and urban design, including a strong GIS component
    • Rural/urban interface planning
    • First Nations planning (with attention to the issues relevant to the First Nations of Vancouver Island and coastal British Columbia)
    • Sustainable economic issues, including tourism
    • Emerging issues such as climate change and planning for post-fossil fuel communities

Admission Requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree (3 year degrees accepted) from an appropriately accredited university
  • A minimum average of 55% calculated in the last two years of the undergraduate degree, with a review of the entire degree
  • IELTS 6.5 with no band under 6.0
  • Work experience preferred, but not mandatory
  • Acceptance and satisfactory review of the following items by the Admissions Committee:
    • Resume
    • Three letters of reference (2 academic referees/1 professional) as well as a statement of interest addressing each of the following areas:
      • Areas of research interest
      • Statement of career interest
      • Statement of volunteer and/or career experience

Master of Education in Educational Leadership (MEd-EL):

  • Prepares students for leadership roles in an Educational setup
  • Graduates work in the top management/administration at schools, colleges, universities, district boards, government’s education department etc.
  • Program provides a balance of research, policy and practice
  • The program will develop leaders who can:
    • Guide the development and implementation of shared values, vision, mission and goals to support learning for all students
    • Foster quality learning opportunities to support student learning
    • Lead teams in becoming assessment literate
    • Create systems and structures for the effective supervision of learning
    • Provide strong leadership in the area of Aboriginal Education
    • Provide knowledgeable guidance regarding current curricula, instructional and assessment practices and their impact on student learning
    • Sustain a collaborative learning culture and climate linked to student learning and based on distributed leadership
    • Build positive and effective interdependencies amongst partner groups
    • Incorporate systemic thinking and strategic planning for school improvement
    • Demonstrate self-knowledge and the personal qualities that support positive relationships and build cultures of integrity
    • Build and support relational trust within the school and community
    • Address issues of diversity and social justice
    • Lead teams in reflective inquiry and action research

  • A letter of intent explaining why the applicant wishes to pursue graduate work in this area
  • Two current, confidential assessment reports

Master of Education in Special Education (MEd-SE):

  • Program embodies an innovative approach to working with students who have special needs
  • Students critically examine historical and contemporary Special Education policies and approaches to formulate a best practice
  • The program focuses on:
    • Context for Development and Learning
    • Informative Assessment
    • Responsive Teaching
    • Re–imagining Special Education
    • Graduates can work as instructors, consultants, administrators, trainers etc. in both public and private setups
