English Language Entry Requirement

The following are the minimum IELTS (Academic) scores required for AUT University qualifications.

  • Some programmes have higher requirements for IELTS entry and these exceptions are listed in the Academic Calendar.
  • IELTS must be used to demonstrate English language proficiency for doctoral programmes, teacher education programmes and health science programmes.
  • For further information refer to the AUT University Calendar


  • 5.5 overall with all bands 5 or higher


  • Depending on particular diploma, either 6 overall with all bands 5.5. or higher, or 5.5 overall with all bands 5 or higher (see the Academic calendar for further information)

Bachelor’s Degree

  • 6 overall with all bands 5.5 or higher

Graduate Diplomas and Certificates and Conjoint Degrees

  • 6.5 overall with all bands 6 or higher

Postgraduate Programmes (Master’s, Postgraduate Diplomas, Postgraduate Certificates and Bachelor with Honours)

  • 6.5 overall with all bands 6 or higher

AUT Scholarships available for International Students

AUT University has a new partial fees scholarship available for International Students.

AUT has an $8000 scholarship for international students studying either Master of Professional Language Studies or Master of Arts in Applied Language Studies. Please find additional information at:

NZEA Awards: $5,000 scholarship available for July 2017

AUT University and Education New Zealand will be offering successful Indian students New Zealand Excellency Award Scholarships (NZEA) of NZ$5000.

To be eligible for a scholarship, students must start studying at AUT University in March 2017, in one of the following programmes:

  • IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0) or equivalent English Language Test
  • Statement of purpose inclusive of reasons that qualify you to be eligible for the scholarship

NOTE: PhD Scholarship Opportunity at AUT – Advanced Thermal Energy Storage

The department of Mechanical Engineering at AUT is currently seeking expressions of interest from candidates wishing to undertake research in the field of Thermal Energy Storage. The project is to be performed in collaboration with industry and will be subject to funding approval by Callaghan Innovation. Callaghan Innovation is a New Zealand Government agency that helps business succeed through technology, research and development.

The successful candidate will ideally have a background in Mechanical Engineering or related field. In addition they will need to satisfy the admission criteria for AUT’s PhD program and hold an appropriate Visa at the time of Application. Candidates should also be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, a high level understanding of heat transfer, experience with engineering design tools such as CAD and computational fluid dynamics and applied research, or product development, would be highly regarded.

The Scholarship on offer (pending approval) is $25k per year for three years, plus the domestic course fees for the three years.
