Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh Scotland, is the eighth-oldest higher education institution in the United Kingdom originating in 1821. It received its university charter in 1966. The name commemorates George Heriot – the 16th century financier to King James, and James Watt – the great 18th century inventor and engineer.
Originally based in the centre of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt University now has four campuses. The main campus is located in Riccarton in the Currie area on the outskirts of the city. Satellite campuses are located in Galashiels in the Borders (Scottish Borders Campus, formerly the Scottish College of Textiles), Stromness (Orkney campus) and our International campus in Dubai Academic City (Heriot-Watt University Dubai campus. The Orkney Campus in Stromness is home to The International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT) which is part of Heriot-Watt University’s Institute of Petroleum Engineering. There is also a wide network of over 60 Approved Learning Partners, in over 30 countries,
Today the University has over 18,000 registered students from across 140 nations, full-time, part-time and distance and supported learning around the world. Of these 10,700 are on international programs, including the MBA program and those studying through one of 60Approved Learning Partners worldwide. Heriot-Watt has around 7,000 on-campus students in Scotland over 31% of whom are from outside the UK including Norway, China, India, Singapore, Malaysia, France, Germany, Spain, Mexico, and Greece. This international focus creates a very cosmopolitan environment within the university.

The University is ranked as one of the top five universities in Scotland. The University Petroleum Engineering Department has received a five –star research rating in the recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) and is consistently rated as one of the top three in the world and top in the UK. The Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics Department of the university is one of the two specialist centers’ in the UK and rated top in the UK. The Edinburgh Business School at Heriot Watt University has twice won the Queen’s award for Export and was rated as the most popular in the UK in recent survey.
