Based in the extremely popular student city of Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumbria is the largest teaching and research University in North East England. It has a student population of around 35,000 with around 4,400 students from over 100 countries. There are a further 3,680 students studying on Northumbria University programmes in their own countries.
Northumbria has a rich history going back through its constituent colleges to the late nineteenth century. Today Northumbria is both research-engaged and business focussed, enjoying excellent links to industry and the professions.

Northumbria’s courses are highly rated. In the National Student Survey 2013, several disciplines achieved 100% satisfaction from the students and half scored 90% or more. Northumbria have a strong national and international reputation for academic quality. The Law Department’s Student Law Office was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize, the highest form of national recognition open to a UK university.

Northumbria’s consistently excellent performance in UK quality audits places it at the very top among modern universities. Sixteen of its subject areas have been awarded 22 or more out of a maximum possible of 24 by the Quality Assurance Agency. All subjects have scored over 20 points, bringing an average score of around 22.
The university has been awarded five National Teaching Fellowships in recognition of excellent teaching.
Northumbria’s research was judged to be ‘World leading’ in 9 out of 12 subject areas assessed in the UK’s most recent Research Assessment Exercise.

Northumbria boasts one of the best city center campuses in the country. It’s award winning City Campus East opened in 2007 and is home the Newcastle Business School, School of Law and School of Design.
Extensive modernisations have been undertaken over the whole campus, including pedestrianisation of the centre of the campus and a further £5 million refurbishment of the Students’ Union building.
New work space specifically for research students has recently been added to the award winning nine store Library.
The brand new £30 million sports complex which opened in summer 2010 provides Northumbria students with World class facilities and opportunities.
Coach Lane Campus is situated in a leafy suburb of the city, 3 miles from City Campus and linked by the University’s free bus service.

Right next to Newcastle is the beautiful county of Northumberland. Boasting breathtaking countryside, rolling hills, miles of outstanding coastline, historic castles, pretty little villages, the largest man made lake in Europe and much more! Northumberland is the perfect setting for outdoor pursuits, from skiing to cycling, hang-gliding to hiking, riding to rock climbing.
Northumbria University is situated in Newcastle upon Tyne, in the north-east of England, which is the regional capital and has excellent leisure and shopping facilities. The City has a rich sporting culture and is home to Newcastle United Premier League Football Club. Newcastle is just two hours and forty minutes away from London by the fastest rail service, whilst Edinburgh (Scotland’s capital) is only an hour and a half away.
Newcastle has its own International Airport. Road travel, by coach or car, is particularly easy as Newcastle stands on the premier north-south route in the UK. Once in Newcastle itself, the extensive local public transport system, including the Metro (Tyneside’s own underground), makes getting around very easy.
