About California State University, Fresno

California State University, Fresno (commonly known as Fresno State) was founded in 1911. The institution is one of 23 campuses that make up the California State University (CSU) System, the largest four-year public system of higher education in the world. The 23,500-student campus is conveniently located in Fresno, California, in the heart of central California. The city of Fresno is within easy driving distance of Yosemite and Kings Canyon national parks, the beautiful California coastline and major cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose. A day in the mountains or day at the beach is a short drive away.

The University is accredited by the California Board of Education, National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education and Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Fresno State is a member of the Western Association of Graduate Schools, the Council of Graduate Schools in the USA, and the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and has 32 nationally accredited departmental programs within 8 colleges/schools, among the highest number within the CSU. The university offers 65 Bachelor’s degrees, 51 Master’s degrees, and 3 Doctoral degrees. Graduates are recruited from prestigious employers from throughout California and the United States.

International Students

The University hosts more than 800 international students representing more then 70 different countries. The International Student Services and Programs (ISSP) office serves international students, scholars and their family members in their transition to the United States and Fresno State. ISSP provides services necessary to meet the special needs of international students and scholars, and programs that promote cultural exchange with our international population, the university, and the surrounding communities of Fresno and Clovis, California.


Life Outside the Classroom

Fresno State believes in supporting students’ lives outside the classroom with activities and opportunities for social and cultural growth. The university is a member of the Mountain West Conference and has 18 NCAA Division I athletic teams, a thriving Greek system, and over 100 student organizations.

The City of Fresno offers a wide range of entertainment opportunities, cultural experiences, and dining venues. The city enjoys hot, dry summers, perfect for swimming, and cool winters.

Undergraduate Admission Requirements

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA (or “B” average) in college preparation courses
  • Score of 61 or higher iBT TOEFL, or
  • 6.0 Overall Band Score on IELTS

Graduate Admission Requirements

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 (or “B” average) in undergraduate coursework
  • Score of 80 or higher iBT TOEFL, or 6.5 Overall Band Score on IELTS
