Admission Requirements

Johnson & Wales University: JWU-Memo Regarding the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) three-year bachelor degree

Memo Regarding the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) three-year bachelor degree admission criteria / protocol for evaluation and acceptance into Johnson & Wales University (JWU) MBA Program. The Institute is governed by the National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology established by the Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India.

Evaluative Criteria for admission to Johnson & Wales University Graduate MBA Program:

1. Degree Requirement

  • First Class with Distinction
  • Upper Second Class

2. No more than five (5) backlogs (i.e., Repeats of any class).

3. Establishment of an application review committee that would evaluate applications of IHM students who have earned a bachelor degree in three (3) years. The committee will be comprised of the following three university representatives: (1) College of Management – Dean or Assistant Dean, Graduate admissions representative and a representative from SAS).

4. Submission of one of the following:  PTE/TOEFL/IELTS

5. GMAT or GRE Required for Second class applicant (i.e., Minimum score of 450).

6. Traditional JWU application requirements

  • Johnson & Wales University (JWU) completed application
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Statement of purpose
  • Official undergraduate transcript

Evaluative criteria for other three (3) year degree institutions in India:

  1. All of the above criteria
  2. NAAC “A” or higher university level
  • Students not meeting any of the above criteria who have completed a minimum of one year “M.COM” with first class M.COM may be considered
  • Students not meeting any of the above criteria who have completed a one-year post graduate diploma with first class distinction from a university only may be considered. Post graduate diplomas from a college will not be considered.

Application Process:

Undergraduate Process:

Applying to Johnson And Wales University (JWU) is easy, best of all it’s free – there’s no application fee. It is necessary to have knowledge of the English language to study at JWU. It is a requirement for all students that will enter any program or A.S. or B.S., to have graduated from high school or its equivalent. To enter the M.B.A. program it is required to have graduated from a university with a B.S. or its equivalent, with an accumulated 2.75 or higher grade point average. It is not necessary to take the SAT or GMAT exams. Johnson And Wales University believes that the best indicator of the ability and will to learn of applicants, is the global grading reflected in his documents and other achievements during high school or B.S. Candidates desiring to enter the university must provide the following information with its corresponding translation:

  1. Undergraduate Application for Admission
  2. English results if available: TOEFL results or its equivalent with a minimum of 550 written, 210 computerized or 80 internet based points. Students applying to the Providence or Miami Campuses have an option to take the TOEFL, but understanding that their acceptance will be to JWU’s ESL program and not directly into their program of study.
  3. Official documentation of higher secondary (high school) completion. For students with examinations such as CXC’s, BGCSE’s, etc. Johnson And Wales University are looking for four – five general passes (1-3 or A-C), including English and Math. Students who take I.B., CAPE or “A levels” will be considered for college credit.
  4. One or more bank account letters/statements/certificates or governmental scholarships, proving or verifying financial support for one academic year (US$ 41,410 – 43,345), which matches the completed and signed International Student Financial Declaration Form. For students that may need a University acceptance in order to qualify or apply for a loan or scholarship, please inform Johnson And Wales University and will help JWU to make an admissions decision without this requirement. An academic acceptance will be issued to those that qualify for admission to JWU and once all of the required admissions documents (including financial support) are received, we can issue a full acceptance that will also come with an I-20 (the document that the US Embassy requires of a student to apply for a US Student Visa.
  5. A completed and signed International Student Financial Declaration Form.
  6. Photocopy of current passport’s biographical section (the page with student’s information and picture).

Post Graduate / MBA Application Process:

  1. Completed and signed Graduate Program Application.
  2. Bachelor’s degree diploma (or equivalent of a four-year accredited university degree), original university transcripts, mark sheets, diplomas or certificates showing all the courses taken and the marks earned as well as the credit hours.
  3. Two letters of recommendation.
  4. A one-page statement of purpose explaining who you are and how your education at JWU will help you with your future career plans.
  5. English results if available: TOEFL results or its equivalent with a minimum of 550 written, 210 computerized or 80 internet based points. Students applying to the Providence or Miami Campuses have an option to take the TOEFL, but understanding that their acceptance will be to JWU’s ESL program and not directly into their program of study.
  6. Deadlines:

Students can apply to Johnson & Wales anytime, for any term. While there is no deadline to register, all of the documents necessary for enrollment must be submitted to the International Admissions office at least three months before the chosen term begins (It is recommended that all documents for the September term are sent by the beginning of June). Processing times for applications vary, and are affected by the type of service used by the applicants to send their documents, whether it is regular mail or courier (preferred).

Scholarships:

The university also awards an unlimited number of partial scholarships to international students. Scholarships offered for international (undergraduate) students are academic (based on their previous academic history). The university scholarships range from US$1,000 – $5,000 a year and are renewable for four academic years or undergraduate study and can not be applied towards our ESL program. There is no need to apply for these scholarships, the only way to qualify to receive them is to apply for admission, as well as supply all of the required admissions documents. Keep in mind that it’s free to apply for admission to Johnson & Wales University.

Students enrolling in Master or M.B.A. programs (available at the Providence campus only) are also eligible for scholarship money by filling out the scholarship form included with the admissions application. This scholarship is for US$1,000, and it is not renewable.
