How To Apply

  1. Complete the International Student Application for Admission
  2. Application fee:
    • Non Refundable USD $106 (International Graduate Applicants)
    • Non Refundable USD $94 (International Undergraduate Applicants)
  3. Proof of English proficiency through a TOEFL or IELTS score Or successfully complete studies at the University of Wisconsin – Stout English as a Second Language Institute
  4. Bank statement to use as documented evidence of sufficient financial resources
  5. Official transcripts (translated into English)

Admissions requirements for English proficiency at the University of Wisconsin-Stout


TOEFL scores

  • For Fall 2014 Minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 61 or Minimum paper-based of 500
  • For Spring 2015 or after Minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 70 or Minimum paper-based of 525

IELTS score

  • For Fall 2014 Minimum score of 5.5
  • For Spring 2015 or after Minimum score of 6.0

* Accepted TOEFL scores below 79 iBT/550 paper-based or IELTS scores of 6.5 will require students to take 1-2 additional English courses

  • Successfully complete University Of Wisconsin-Stout’s English as a Second Language Institute program
  • For additional circumstances where the English proficiency requirement may be waived, please visit:
  • Students with low English proficiency can be considered for conditional admission. If interested, please send all the documents except for the English Proficiency documentation.


  • TOEFL score with a minimum iBT of 79 or paper-based of 550

Note: Applicants with TOEFL scores ranging from 70-78 iBT or 523-547 paper-based will be considered for admission and are required to take at least one advanced level language course through UW-Stout’s English as a Second Language Institute.

  • IELTS score of at least 6.5
  • Successfully complete UW-Stout’s English as a Second Language Institute program
  • Successfully complete an English language program affiliated with UW-Stout
  • Proof of English proficiency is not required if the student has earned a Bachelor’s degree within the last 5 years from an accredited institution in the USA or a country where
  • English is recognized as the first official language

Conditional Admission

Students can apply for conditional admission if they submit all required documents except for the TOEFL or IELTS. University of Wisconsin - Stout - TOEFL & IELTS

  • Students can retake the TOEFL/IELTS until they meet the minimum score required
  • Students can complete studies at the English as a Second Language Institute
